Steampunk'd!

Post by Regret on Wed Apr 13, 2011 7:42 am

The year is 1852.
Southern England was devastated by French nukes in 1805, yet they still lost the Napoleonic War when the British Amphibious Navy crawled out of the sea at Calais in 1806. However, now the seat of power is in Coventry, and while the Empire is still strong, it is starting to show its age. The characters have been invited to a ball on the Wormfeld estate in the countryside, but now the house is under siege from an army of malfunctioning Lost Boys, machines made by lobotomising a convict and grafting new apparatus into them to turn them into a militant police force armed with steam-powered guns. Originally a gift from the Russian Tsar, they are a bit of a two-edged sword.
In short, you are trapped, and even venturing too close to the windows could spell doom for you.

I'll join!

Name: Elisabeth (Lis) Brekin
Age: 17
Looks: Shoulder-length red hair, blue eyes, freckled and usually sunburned (much to the dismay of her mother). Petit, slender. At the moment, her hair's up in an elegant French twist.
Clothing: At the ball, a pale blue gown that sets off her eyes and hair at the same time. Unknown to her mother, she's wearing boots and trousers under the dress.
Bio: Was born in Glasgow, but moved to London when she was five. Her older brother was supposed to escort her to the ball, but got sick at the last minute and she came by herself.

Book Title: Carrion Call
Name: Victor Lourdes
Age: 23
Physical appearance: Light brown hair. Not particularly tall, but quite well-built and in his prime. A long, clever-looking face with a friendly cast to it.
Bio: a painter who gets mixed up in a bizarre plot to kill Queen Victoria.
Extra info: Victor was invited to the ball because he is a popular artist in certain circles, and a distant friend of the third lord of Wormfeld.

Victor stands in a corner, sipping his drink and looking ill at ease. Suddenly he spots someone he thinks he recognises. "Miss Brekin? Is that you?"

Lis turns at the sound of her name and smiles. "Why Mr. Lourdes! Fancy seeing you here." She scans the crowd before asking, "Did you come alone?"

"Yes," replies Victor. "Sadly. How about yourself?"

"Ben got scarlet fever at the last minute, so I came by myself as well. How is your [insert family member here]?" Lis asks, tucking a loose curl behind her ear.

"I'm sorry to say that my uncle is no longer with us." Victor looks down for a few seconds. "He passed away just the other week. Cholera, the Doctor said, although he professed some puzzlement as to where he might have picked it up."

A concerned frown crosses Lis's face and she touches his arm gently. "I'm so sorry, Victor. Your uncle was a very dear friend of my mother's, we'll all miss him very much. Can I get you a drink?" she asks, nodding towards the refreshments.

"Yes, actually. That would be delightful," Victor smiles politely and follows her across the ballroom with sharp, agile steps. "Just a slight comment, Miss Brekin, you wouldn't happen to have seen some strange lights outside, would you?"

"Oh thank goodness, I thought I was hallucinating. Do you know what they are?" Lis pours two glasses of Scotch and hands one to Mr. Lourdes. Her mother would have been appalled by her choice of beverage, but through Ben and visits to the harbor disguised as a boy, Lis had built up an alcohol immunity most girls didn't even dram of having.

Victor sips his scotch. "Good year, what?" He smiles and sips it again. At length he replies to the question. "That would be the lights of the Lost Boys. Have you heard about them? They were a present from the Russian Tsar, but they cause almost as much harm as good."

Lis tilts her head. "The Lost Boys? Those mechanical children? Yes, I've heard of them, but what on earth are they doing here?"

"That's a good question, I was hoping we could find out the answer. In fact, I-" The chandelier drops shatters suddenly, scattering shards of crystal in all directions. It immediately stops emitting light as the electrical light is broken, and drops towards the crowd.
"Good heavens!" cries Victor, and tackles Lis out of the path of the falling chandelier.

"Oof!" Lis groans as she slams into the floor, her hair starting to slip from the twist. She smiles reproachfully at Victor and suppresses a laugh. "Do you always throw yourself at women, or am I the exception?"

"You have the inestimable honour of being the first woman I've ever thrown to the ground," replies Victor, standing up, brushing himself off and extending a hand to help Lis up. "Why d'you think that happened?"

Lis takes his hand then squints at the ceiling. "Well, it looks as if the bolts connecting it to the ceiling were loosened, so the only thing holding it up were the electrical wires. Someone must have cut them from outside, but who?"

"Someone who doesn't like the upper class, I'm guessing..." Lis trail off, eyes fixed on the floating lights outside. "Of course... the Lost Boys! What if someone reprogrammed them to attack the house? Wasn't the crown prince supposed to be here?"

Lis starts pacing around, her boots making suspicious clunking noises with every step. "Let's see... whoever reprogrammed them must have a quarrel with both England and Russia. That way, the crown prince could be assassinated, but the blame would land squarely on the Tsar's shoulders!"

"The French? They're still sore at us for that business with the Amphibious Navy. But that's their fault for decimating the exclusion zone." Victor looks down. "Please explain, why do your boots sound so strange?"

Lis blushes and lifts the hem of her skirt to reveal heavy combat boots. "I really hate ladies' shoes, they're so uncomfortable. Mother would have a fit if she saw them. But the French seems like a good guess."
